The Spine is an urban food center providing urban agriculture education and food bank services to the Rainier Beach community and the South Seattle region. It aims to foster connection and increase interaction between Rainier Beach’s diverse ethnic groups through urban agriculture practices. The project increased the current Rainier Valley Food Bank’s facility capacity to help serve more community members and created a community education center to expand the community’s knowledge of advanced urban farming techniques, specifically aquaponic and vertical farming. The project ultimately provides sustainable, locally produced, and healthy foods.
